The Jazz Gallery family deeply mourns the passing of Roy Hargrove. Roy, along with Dale Fitzgerald and Lezlie Harrison, founded The Jazz Gallery in 1995 in the loft space at 290 Hudson Street Roy and Dale had leased in 1992. The second floor of 290 Hudson Street was The Jazz Gallery’s home until we moved to 1160 Broadway in 2012.
Roy’s spirit and profound musicality had a deep and continuing impact on all we did and will continue to do at The Jazz Gallery. His high standards of musical excellence, as well as the breadth of the music with which he was associated, are what The Jazz Gallery has sought to present on a regular basis. In recent years, despite a grueling performance schedule that took him all over the world and health issues that frequently interrupted this schedule, Roy always found time to support The Jazz Gallery, performing annually during the holiday season, with all-star groups at our annual gala, and with his own group as his schedule allowed.
We will miss him deeply and will remain forever grateful for how he helped launch The Jazz Gallery in 1995. As we move forward, we will strive to perpetuate his musical legacy and continue to present the kind of exciting, innovative, and moving music for which The Jazz Gallery has always been known, the kind of music Roy Hargrove made throughout his all too short life.

An excellent overview of Roy’s career can be found in Nate Chinen’s perceptive obituary for National Public Radio.
